IT’S TIME…

To replace a racist, segregated school system and oppressive governance structure that has mis-educated and punished millions of children for far too long.

Mayoral Control in NYC has silenced parents, divided school communities and reaped havoc on the lives of career educators, school workers, and ed-activists who try valiantly to make a positive difference.

IT’S TIME…

For our world renowned city to become the leader for this nation by adopting a fully democratic, Human Rights based governance system providing excellence, equity and equality in educating all students.

We are insisting that democracy, dignity, decency and Human Rights be taught and practiced throughout a new kind of School Governance system that respects and addresses the voices and needs of all rights holders— not just the privileged and politically connected.

IT’S TIME.

Resolution on New York City School Governance

NYC Coalition to Finally End Mayoral Control 2022

For NYC to End Mayoral Control.

Here’s some background on replacing the governance system of NYC’s schools:

After years of meetings, research and grassroots work by members of the Coalition for Public Education / Coalición por la Educación Pública (CPE/CEP) and the Independent Commission On Public Education (iCOPE), a draft Human Rights-based Education Governance Plan was helped along by (then NY State Assemblywoman) Inez Barron and her staff.

Then in 2014, Esmerelda Simmons, a nationally acclaimed Civil Rights attorney and the former executive director of the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College, provided her legal insight and energized our efforts.

Dr. Sam Anderson and Civil Rights Attorney Esmerleda Simmons discuss the process of finally ending Mayoral Control.

Executive Summary of a New Bill to End Mayoral Control and bring about a Human Rights Based System of Public Education for NYC

NYC Coalition to Finally End Mayoral Control 2022

  • The idea that ordinary parents, teachers and activists could come together to change education law was seeded several years ago with a policy draft they created based on “Education as a Human Right.”

  • But only 75% of this grassroots, community-based, labor of love ever got completed.

  • Given all that’s changed and all that needs changing in NYC, help us complete the remaining 25% of the Human Rights, proposed legislation so we have a new, extraordinarily responsive and representative school governance guide for our post-pandemic city.

“The time is always right to do right.” - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Join the NYC Coalition and let’s review the work already done.

Together, let’s see what can be added to strengthen it.

Let’s get the draft legislation finalized, and together, let’s get a new Human Rights-based Education Governance Law passed in Albany to finally replace Mayoral Control.

The Coalition's co-founders are grateful to the following NYC groups for their commitment to human rights and democracy in education:

The Mothers’ Agenda NY (The MANY),

Independent Commission On Public Education (iCOPE),

The Youth Researchers for A New Education System (YRNES)

S.E.E.D.S. Inc. (Seedswork: Service, Education, Economic Development & Science)

Special thanks to: The Coalition for Public Education / Coalición por la Educación Pública (CPE/CPE)

For over a decade, CPE continues to provide city-wide parent organizing and leadership training.

CPE’s work creating the draft & human rights legislation for school governance was a labor of community love for NYC’s public school children.
