Mayoral Control has a 20 year history— but a lot of busy people in NYC don’t know how or why NY State legislators changed the law and allowed one politician to rule over the education of millions of our diverse students.
Examine the Present:
Our Reality=Disenfranchisement
Mayoral Control only exists in urban cities with large numbers of students of color. The imposition of this dictatorial governance system is undemocratic. It has, and still is adversely affecting NYC due to the singular controls levied by the mayor’s unchecked authority and changing whims. We, the citizens of NYC have no say about continuing or ending Mayoral Control since we have no voting rights on this matter.
Plan for the Future:
Use the Wisdom of the Community
Eyeing the future, the Human Rights Education Governance Plan requires contemporary review. It needs the wise input of YOUR ideas and human rights vision, legal expertise, local and city-wide organizing work and a strong lobbying effort.
Rights-holders must envision & believe in our united power to realize change.
The only healing way into a future that is so politically, socially, economically and racially scarred is for all rights holders to band together in power to demand a change in the law governing our schools. We see the creation of an Education Constitution for NYC, democratically elected district school boards, and the establishment of a People’s Board of Education as the only way forward.
